What Causes the Blue Screen Death?

If you utilize a computer running the Microsoft Windows operating system, you just might have to deal with a frustrating error called the BSOD. Short for Blue Screen of Death , this acronym is represented by a blue screen with a code that hints at the source of the problem. Though similar issues occur on other platforms, the Blue Screen of Death is infamous for occurring on Windows-based computers.

Blue Screen Causes and Symptoms

Like many Windows errors, blue screens are usually due to specific problems occurring within the operating system. Some of the most common causes include troubled device drivers , memory issues, incompatible DLL files and an unstable registry.

Drivers

Device drivers are small but essential programs that hardware devices need to function properly. When installing the disk that came with your printer, scanner or camera, you are also installing the device drivers for that particular device. Unfortunately drivers sometimes contain bugs, become outdated or corrupted. This often leads to issues of incompatibility that may cause your hardware not to work right and ultimately result in the Blue Screen of Death.

Memory

RAM can experience issues when a computer attempts to process too many memory-intensive operations. This typically occurs when simultaneously running multiple programs or applications are automatically running in the background with the startup process. When the applications on your computer compete with each other for memory, the system may run incredibly slow and eventually crash its way to the BSOD.

DLLs

Dynamic Link Libraries, or DLLs, are a necessary part of the Windows operating system. Many software applications rely on these files in order to launch or run certain processes. If a DLL file is missing or corrupt, the program it is specific to usually will not function as intended. If the matter is not addressed, it could eventually lead to the Blue Screen of Death. When a blue screen error occurs as the result of DLL issues, many programmers refer to the instance as “DLL Hell.” This indicates that you will experience a tough time with your PC until fixing the problem.

The Registry

The registry is a database within the Windows operating system. This area is designed to store configuration files for your software and hardware components as well information regarding user preferences and the system itself. The more you use the computer, the more changes are made to the registry. Over time, this often results in corrupt or invalid entries that lead to stability issues and crashes in the form of the Blue Screen of Death.

Conclusion

When the Blue Screen of Death flashes across your screen, it shows up with a message shedding a little light on the error. It is advisable to write this information down and use it to get to the root of the problem. If you’re not familiar with the error message, visit the Microsoft website and enter the information into their database. The company usually has information available regarding relative errors along with probable solutions to fix them.
